Ms. Gay Vest Fleming, age 77, of Louisville, returned to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Ms. Fleming was born in Ezel, KY on September 1, 1939 to the late Tom Henry and Miriam Cora (Hamilton) Vest. She graduated from Ezel High School in 1957 where she was a cheerleader, won many awards in Public Speaking and Bible reading. She was May Queen in 1955, she acted in plays and loved to sing in church services. She was the first girl to show a 4-H Club Baby Beef and hers brought the most money. After moving to Louisville, Ms. Fleming modeled, she was in the Miss Louisville Pageant where she was titled Miss Congeniality. She attended Spencerian College where she was trained as a secretary. She worked at the Courier Journal, the KY State Agricultural Dept. and timed the pipe smoking contest at the KY State Fair. She later worked as Office Manager at Gordons Transport and became a Kentucky Colonel.
Among those who preceded her in death include, her sisters, Lois Faye Klapheke and Juanita Vest.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter and best friend who shared her life, Lisa Gay Anderson; her son, Mark David Anderson (Lynn); her brothers, Thomas Vest, Ira Vest and William Vest and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Gay was an avid reader, she loved to work crossword puzzles. Her most favorite times were when she and her daughter would spend Thanksgiving at the KY State Resort Parks, where they walked every day in the woods and explored the local towns nearby.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:30 pm (EST) at Okolona Baptist Church (9301 Preston Hwy., Louisville, KY) with burial at Pennsylvania Run Cemetery. Family may pay their respects on Saturday from 10:30 am until the time of service and friends may pay their respects from 12:00 pm until the time of service at the church. Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
